What You'll Train

Real BJJ, Different Room

Two concerns come up constantly from women considering their first BJJ class: the gym environment itself, and simple physical proximity to training partners they've never met. Women's Only removes both directly - every Saturday, the entire gym belongs to women only, taught by Jessen Ramcharan, and no prior training is required to walk in. The technical content is real BJJ - positional control, escapes, self-defense-relevant movement - not a diluted version taught elsewhere. What's different is the room, not the curriculum.

The Math Behind "Size Doesn’t Matter"

A Choke Doesn’t Care How Strong The Arm Applying It Is

It sounds like a slogan until it's broken down as actual physics. A rear naked choke closes off blood flow through the carotid arteries using body positioning and angle - the force required to apply it doesn't scale with the size or strength of the person applying it, it scales with correct mechanics. Same with an armbar: hip position and leverage against a joint's natural range of motion, not bicep strength, is what makes it work against someone larger. This is the actual mechanical reason BJJ was developed in the first place - a smaller, lighter practitioner using correct leverage beats raw strength, not as an inspirational idea but as a measurable fact about how joints and airways work. It's also why the technique taught in this room is identical to what's taught anywhere else at VIA - the mechanics don't need adjusting for size, because they were never dependent on it.

A choke or an armbar doesn't scale with strength - it scales with angle and position, which is exactly why leverage beats size.

Common Questions About Women's Only

No prior training required, and the entire gym is women only for the hour. It follows the same real structure as any first BJJ class - warm-up, technique broken down step by step, and light controlled practice, taught by Jessen Ramcharan.

Yes, and there's real research behind it, not just marketing. A 2020 study on women completing self-defense training found significantly lower rates of assault over the following year - and BJJ's ground-based design matches the exact scenario most women describe fearing: being pulled down and pinned.

No - and the fear of being the weakest person in the room is common, real, and doesn't hold up once you're actually on the mat. BJJ is built around leverage and positioning, which is exactly why size and strength matter less here than most people assume beforehand.

Start with Gi. The extra fabric gives both training partners more to grip, which slows exchanges down and makes it easier to learn control and positioning as a true beginner - the same advice that applies to any first-time BJJ student.
