VIA doesn't run a one-night self-defense seminar. It teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art built around controlling someone bigger and stronger, trained every week so it holds up under pressure. The two worries women raise most, the gym environment and close contact with strangers, are exactly why the Saturday Women's Only class exists: the entire gym belongs to women for the hour, and no experience is required.
BJJ black belt and 3x MMA champion. Women of every experience level, no prior training required.
Leverage Beats Size
Every BJJ submission runs on mechanics, not muscle. A choke works by angle and position against the neck. An armbar works by putting the hips against a joint's natural range of motion. Neither gets easier because the person applying it is bigger. That's the entire reason the art exists, and it's why a smaller woman with correct technique can control a larger attacker on the ground.
A choke or an armbar doesn't scale with strength. It scales with angle and position.
What a Class Actually Looks Like
No surprises on day one. Every Women's Only class follows the same structure.
Warm-Up
Light movement to get loose. It's preparation, not a fitness test.
Technique
Escapes, control, and self-defense-relevant movement, broken down step by step.
Live Practice
A controlled round to apply what you just drilled, at your own pace.
Who's Teaching, When
The Women's Only class runs Saturday mornings at 10 AM. Women are welcome in every other VIA class too. Women's Only is an option, not a requirement.

Real Talk, No Gatekeeping
- Women of every experience level, including total beginners.

- Women who already train and want more mat time with other women.
What Women Ask Before Their First Class
- Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good self-defense for women?
Yes. Women who complete self-defense training show significantly lower assault rates over the following year (a 2020 study), and BJJ trains the exact situation most women say they fear: being pulled to the ground and held there. It teaches how to escape, control, and get back up.
The research behind it- I'm not strong or in shape. Can I still start?
Yes. No prior training or fitness level is required. BJJ runs on leverage, angles, and position rather than strength, which is why smaller people can control larger ones. Fitness improves from training; it isn't the entry fee.
Why strength isn't the requirement- Is this a one-time self-defense seminar?
No. VIA teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an ongoing weekly class, so the skills are drilled and pressure-tested over time instead of covered once and forgotten. The Women's Only class runs Saturday mornings, and women are welcome in every other class too.
- What happens in a first Women's Only class?
A light warm-up, real technique broken down step by step, and a controlled practice round, taught by Jessen Ramcharan. The entire gym is women only for the hour, and nobody expects you to know anything when you walk in.
